Jonathan Diener from The Swellers sat down and answered some questions from street teamers and fans. Here is Part 1: 1. Does anyone in the band have any pre or post show rituals? We all have our own set of rules and rituals, but I think the most important law we abide by is NO EATING AN HOUR BEFORE WE PLAY. I’ve had some bad instances with a foot long sub a few years ago… We all make sure to stretch at least 20 minutes before we go on to prevent injury and soreness the next day. A lot of people think they’re invincible, but when you’re on tour your body acts like an 80 year old man. You smell and you hurt everywhere all the time haha! 2. What are you currently listening to on your iPod? Right now the number one album I can’t stop listening to is Nada Surf’s ‘The Stars Are Indifferent To Astronomy’. Also new albums from The Menzingers, The Sidekicks, Cheap Girls, Fun., and Noel Gallagher’s solo album are really good listens. 3. Which member of the band would be most likely to do karaoke? Anto is the KING of karaoke. He will transform into whatever singer he’s supposed to be the second the music starts playing. Any rendition he does of a Creed song will get a standing ovation. It gets weird, REALLY weird. This is why we love Anto. 4. Favorite guilty pleasure song? Our whole band is OBSESSED with Taylor Swift. It sucks how good she is. The songs are incredibly moving compositions, great storytelling and it just makes you feel good all-around. It’s easy listening but when you start analyzing it… it’s brilliant. 5. What is your favorite tattoo, and why? I think my favorite tattoo is starting to be my American Robin on my right leg. It’s the newest one I got done by my buddy Tim Shafer aka Shafey Fury in Florida. It was a cover up of my Michigan outline tattoo, which was my first when I was 18 years old. It’s kind of symbolic that I got it covered up. First of all it was free, poorly done, and half of our band quit after ALL of us got it. It was also a way for me to feel relief and not feel guilt if I ever decided to travel away from Michigan. The American Robin is the Michigan state bird and when it gets cold most birds travel south to warmth. On top of all of that, I think it looks rad. 6. Favorite song off of your new album and what is it about? For me, ‘Parkview’ is my favorite off of the album and favorite to play live. It was written during a really hard transitional time in my life while we were coincidentally in a temporary living situation on a street called Parkview. It’s mainly about me not being a push over anymore, standing up for myself and moving on rather than being bummed about things. Playing it live isn’t only physically fun but it gets pretty emotional at the heavy ending watching the kids in the crowd sing and head bang. 7. What was the first CD you ever bought with your own money? I love answering this question. It was ‘Pennybridge Pioneers’ by the Swedish melodic punk rock quartet known as Millencolin. The album changed my life and the way I look at music. I heard about them from listening to Punk O Rama compilations and LOVED the singers voice and the way the music made me feel. I bought the album and it actually helped me learn to play drums by playing along to it every day for years. 8. What do people in Flint think of Michael Moore? I guess it’s the same way as asking what people in Michigan think about Barack Obama. It goes both ways. Some people who just hear gossip or read headlines without looking into anything come up with assumptions he’s a big liar and only shows bad sides of Flint. To the more informed follower of his work, I think he does really great stuff. He brings up questions people are afraid to ask, he does things in a way you HAVE to pay attention which I would never have the guts to do. He says he wants Flint to get better, he isn’t saying it’s a dump. That’s where people get confused. 9. How do you stay entertained during long distance drives while on tour? We have a lot of weird games we play in the van when people aren’t all passed out on their respective bench. We have a game where we honk the horn to the rhythm of a song and the rest of the guys have to guess, even though it’s just a single note the whole time. We also have a game called Mario Karting which we legally can’t talk about.. it involves bananas. Also we just jam new records and have sing alongs, which movies on our laptops or just get engaged in deep conversation about weird stuff like the meaning of life, ghosts, and food.

First of all, we never got to send out a public statement thanking everyone who made our first full U.S. co-headlining tour a success. One week after I graduated high school in 2006 we got in our van, attached the trailer and went on a 5 week tour. We haven’t stopped doing that, but things just keep getting better and better. After about 3 or 4 years of opening for bigger bands and playing short sets, we’re INCREDIBLY grateful that you guys gave us a chance to prove ourselves pulling our own weight. We honestly didn’t know what to expect and we ended up having smiles on our faces every night. It was a new experience going on tour across the states with 3 bands from the UK and it actually being a success. We loved all the guys and all of you for coming to the shows.
The second we got home, Nick and I were packing to move out of our shared house in Flint, MI and go our separate ways for the first time in our lives. Almost 24 years of being together close quarters whether it’s in a house or in a 15 passenger van finally coming to an end. We packed our things, I moved to Grand Blanc with my girlfriend and Nick moved to Saginaw with his. We’re setting up the Swellers HQ at his place since I live in an apartment. We had our first jam in a while in his studio room and it felt great. As you may know by now, Nick and I never stop writing. The songs that make a record are usually around a year to two years old by the time they’re recorded, so we always want something new. I think we’re on to something really cool. We have a handful of songs we just need lyrics for and to add some fat to the skeleton structures we have right now. It’s really exciting being in this position again. Creating something of our own is the best feeling in the world for us.
WIth that said, we’re on what feels like a long break to us when in reality we’re home for a little over a month. We decided to do a free show in our hometown of Flint, MI at a rad bar called Woobies that our friend Mark Welch books. He’s been keeping the scene alive in our area the last few years and we’re very gracious someone like him stepped up to the plate. The whole idea of the show is to finally play for friends in our area again and show them although we travel nonstop we still have our hometown in our hearts. We didn’t want any drama or egos with guest list or excuses of why people couldn’t make it to see us so we made the show completely free. We’re getting posters designed and silk screened for the event, and all of the proceeds are going straight to The Flint Local 432, the venue in town that is slowly but surely reopening. The other two bands, Making Friends and Empty Orchestra also have our previous members Garrett Burgett and Lance Nelson playing in them, so it’s a pretty cool reunion of sorts.
Next up after that we return to the United Kingdom/mainland Europe with our new friends Deaf Havana. The craziest part for us is being able to once again play Groezrock, our favorite festival in the entire world. It’s like punk rock heaven. Last time we played was on the main stage in front of about 8,000 people right before my favorite band growing up, Millencolin, which was a dream come true. This year we get to play the same day as the almighty REFUSED and we’re ecstatic. We’ve been bugging people for months when we heard the rumor and we can’t believe it’s finally happening. We’ll be on the Macbeth Stage with our buddies We Are The Ocean. It’s a Battle Of The Bands stage, but screw it, we get to play still! You just gotta do some searching and you’ll find us!
Finally, I just want to let everyone know this summer we released a record we’re extremely proud of called Good For Me. If you’re a fan of ours, or just a casual follower of our social networks, we highly suggest you pick up a copy of this album - CD / Vinyl / iTunes / Spotify / Amazon / Amazon MP3  / anywhere.
We just want you to hear our blood, sweat and tears. Last year we were only home 3 months of the entire year to promote the record and we would love for a copy to get into everyone’s hands.
Thank you for sticking around with us for this long. We really do appreciate it. We always will give back to you guys in one way or another and hope you stick along with us on this crazy, bumpy ride we call the music industry. We’ll be seeing you on the road, or on your computer screen, or in your stereo. Take care.
